15 of the brightest, boldest, most colorful stairs
Inspiration for a pop of color in an untapped area of your home
I’m working on a whole house project at the moment, helping the homeowners choose colors for every room in the house from the basement to the attic. I love this kind of project because it’s the ultimate way to get a house to look and feel like the people who call it home. Being able to put your unique stamp on a space creates an energy that is so personal that it enhances the life that you live there. I always say that your home is the place where you get to feel the safest, be the most vulnerable, feel the most relaxed, motivated, creative and so much more. We should be filling our homes with colors and textures and objects that work towards those goals. Each home is filled with a unique set of individuals, and finding what speaks to everyone is a challenge that is not for the faint hearted! Rooms have varying personalities and that’s often why common areas are kept relatively neutral where they’re pleasing to most who use it, and children’s bedrooms, for example, can be treated with a more individualized approach. Walking through a house and figuring out where exactly to push the boat out with color, and where to be a little more restrained, is one of my favorite parts of my job. It’s so fun to see rooms come to life with a color treatment that makes sense for the people who use them day in, day out.
So, back to this whole house project I’ve got on the go. The basement has recently been renovated and the homeowners have made some beautiful choices. It’s many things down there, as most basements are; part family room, part hang out space, part playroom… and then of course there’s the laundry room and mechanical rooms that need to be accessed (hello, sump pump, thank you for your service.). Marrying together a space such as this isn’t always easy. There’s a lot to consider in a relatively small space and you can’t just been splashing paint all over willy nilly. So in a space like this, it makes sense to make a focal point out of something. Or maybe one or two things, we’re just trying not to overload the space. The way this basement is set up, it’s perfect for a painted staircase moment, of which I am a huge fan.
I have a whole Pinterest page dedicated to staircases (of course I do!) that I’ve been pinning to for years, so I can honestly say I’ve been ready for this situation for a while. Plus, I have a bright red painted staircase in my own basement, so you know I’m going to be on board with this suggestion.
So whilst I think on what exactly to do with the staircase in the basement I’m working on, I thought I’d share with you 15 excellent examples of colored stairs from around the world wide web.

While some of these images are definitely quite a commitment, they serve as great inspiration for what’s possible and show how even a hint of a color in a stairwell, on the risers or even on a stair runner, can really transform an area of the home thats often forgotten when it comes to color.
Even if this isn’t your jam for your own home, I hope you’ve had fun taking in the eye candy of those who took the plunge :)
